Memory of moments with Roy and Elia

Almost at the end of this PBS video, Roy showed another chair made by a student, which is actually made by me. ;-)

I spent a week(6 days) taking a Windsor Continuous Arm Rocker chair class by Elia BIzzarri last summer. Roy Underhill was a student as well at that class. After the class, I went to Boston to take a Mike Dunbar's Windsor Sack Back chair class, and then returned to Elia's place to take one-on-one instruction. The PBS video was taken during the week when I was in Boston.

This a picture of Roy and Elia taken by me in a pub after finishing the chair making class.

North Bennet Street School

The North Bennet Street Industrial School was founded by Pauline Agassiz Shaw in 1885. With the success of her first kindergarten, the city of Boston’s school system retained the classes and Shaw moved on to fund the North Bennet Street School(NBSS) for training of immigrants for employment in traditional trades.

Today, the NBSS offers 8 full time professional programs, such as Bookbinding, Cabinet and Furniture Making, Carpentry, Jewelry Making and Repair, Locksmithing, Piano Technology, Preservation Carpentry, and Violin Making and Repair.

The NBSS is located in an Italian neighborhood of Boston, known as the North End. The main part of the NBSS consists of a 19th century building -- a former church combined with three adjacent town houses.
