North Bennet Street School

The North Bennet Street Industrial School was founded by Pauline Agassiz Shaw in 1885. With the success of her first kindergarten, the city of Boston’s school system retained the classes and Shaw moved on to fund the North Bennet Street School(NBSS) for training of immigrants for employment in traditional trades.

Today, the NBSS offers 8 full time professional programs, such as Bookbinding, Cabinet and Furniture Making, Carpentry, Jewelry Making and Repair, Locksmithing, Piano Technology, Preservation Carpentry, and Violin Making and Repair.

The NBSS is located in an Italian neighborhood of Boston, known as the North End. The main part of the NBSS consists of a 19th century building -- a former church combined with three adjacent town houses.
